SS Mendi documentary screening
On the 100th year anniversary of the tragic sinking of the SS Mendi the Alliance Française will hold a screening of the documentary "Troopship Tragedy: the story of the SS Mendi". The SS Mendi was a British steamship, originally a passenger vessel but later used as a troopship to carry soldiers to the front in World War One and sunk into the English Channel. Of the many South Africans soldiers who perished on this night, the majority were black South Africans troops heading for the front lines of the First World War in supportive positions.Years later, Sabido Productions commissioned Marion Edmunds to create a story/documentary about the sinking of the SS Mendi and the people it transported.
The event will be held at the Roof Garden Bar. Doors open at 6.pm and movie starts at 6.30.pm. Entrance fee is R30 for AF members and university students and R50 for general public. Director Marion Edmunds and narrator Zwai Mjigima will be present for an afterward discussion and Q&A. The screening is organised by the Alliance Française in collaboration with the French Embassy in South Africa.
In parallel the NMM Museum is doing an exhibition about the SS Mendi which opens on 21st February 2017/
