NELSON MANDELA BAY ROLLED OUT THE RED CARPET FOR AMAA 2015
Popularly known as the "City of the Legends", Port Elizabeth played host to over 1,500 creative professionals from across the globe converging in the city and the province, Eastern Cape the birthplace to legends such as Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo and Walter Sisulu, to honour the men and women producing more movies per year than Hollywood. The 11th annual African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), which has been dubbed the "African Oscars" by CNN, took place on Saturday, 26 September 2015 at the Boardwalk International Convention Centre (ICC).
Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, founder and CEO of AMAA opened the evening with a wonderful speech about how Africans need to come together in order to do away with borders.
Despite a few hiccups leading up to this prestigious event, including a late start to the evening and many nominees experiencing VISA challenges when flying into South Africa, the AMAAs 2015 was well attended by “who’s who” in Port Elizabeth as well as the AMAA 2015 nominees from across the globe. The evening was open to the public who also had the opportunity to mingle with A-lister industry giants, walk the red carpet and treat themselves to a night of style and glamour. All guests were entertained by Asanda Mqiki, Edge and KCEE.
AMAAs is more than just about awards: it’s about a lifestyle of class style- , glitz and razzmatazz. It is the biggest gathering of filmmakers from across the African continent and the rest of the World. The 184 nominees across the 24 categories attended the evening, as well as the judges and invited guests, including many A-list celebrities. The AMAA’s is the most highly recognised award in the African film industry globally.
