Description

Across the road from the Opera House stands St. Augustine’s Cathedral. The church was built under the direction of Father Thomas Murphy the foundation stone being laid in December 1861. The building was not finished until 1866 when it was consecrated by Bishop Patrick Moran. Father Murphy was also responsible for the establishment of the Holy Rosary Convent in 1867. He is buried beneath the high altar in the cathedral.
