Afrikaans Gaan Groot
Centrestage hosts ‘Afrikaans Gaan Groot’ In a first for the 14-year old entertainment company, Afrikaans rock music will take Centrestage as their own brand new music review entitled ‘Afrikaans Gaan Groot’ Showing a completely different side to Centrestage, this is a feel-good show which features a wide range of musical styles and eras. While ‘Afrikaans music at its best’ given the Centrestage stamp is promised, this is a show which should not be missed by anyone, irrespective of their home language. Drawing from many eras, the main focus of this show is the fun Afrikaans rock music of the past couple of years which has been made enormously popular by the likes of Bok Van Blerk, Dozi, Ray Dylan, Gerhard Steyn, Kurt Darren, Steve Hofmeyer, Pieter Koen, Nicholas Louw, Liani May, Eden, Bobby Van Jaarsveld, Juanita Du Plessis, The Campbells and Karen Zoid, amongst others. Interspersed in between are favourite hits from the big name Afrikaans legends who have become an integral part of our upbringing and whose songs are sung around braai-fires and at parties – from the likes of Anton Goosen, Koos Kombuis, David Kramer, Sonja Herholdt, Johannes Kerkorrel, Jannie Moolman, Laurika Rauch and Lize Beekman. Musically directed by Wayne Kallis once again, Centrestage will be taking their usual high-paced, entertainment-focused, harmony filled approach as they introduce four very experienced newcomers to the Centrestage fold and to the newly formed Centrestage Gatskop band. Veteran singer, songwriter and himself a larger than life livewire entertainer, Pieter Kruger joins the band on bass and vocals, whilst Jeffries Bay resident and vocal coach Elsabe Rademeyer adds the female touch to the show. The golden voiced body-builder and finalist on several television talent shows, Robert Gillmer, joins talented young drummer Russel Sneyd, whilst Centrestage regulars Arno Erasmus (guitar, keyboards, bass and vox), Will Jenson (keyboards and vox) and Emile Doubell complete the Gatskop lineup. Having formed the Aweregse Afrikaans Musiek Klub along with Piet Van Niekerk and Roline Norval between 1997 and 2003, Centrestage owner has Gary Hemmings has had a long affinity with Afrikaans music and this show is a natural continuation of that work. “During that golden time at the PE Club and later at the Harbour Sports Café, we regularly brought down and staged many of the top Afrikaans performers of those times – including most of the earlier performers we feature in the show. One of my proudest moments was buying the Koos Kombuis album ‘Die Blou Kombuis’ – and reading a thank you from him on the CD sleeve for helping him with the album concept!” Describing his approach to the show, Kallis says “We've tried to stick to the spirit of the music, with its often carefree, feel-good Abba-esque attitude, as well as make sure we retain the weight and emotion of the songs when necessary. It’s been great to work with a bunch of guys who are this passionate about Afrikaans music!” Popular recent hit to look forward to include Baby Tjoklits, Hokaai Stop Die Lorrie, Skud Jou Biscuit, Kaptein, Jessica, 54 5de Straat, Soen My Nie Meer Nie, Toe Stop My Hart, Aan Jou Vas, Mengelmoeskardoes, Drie Pikkewyne and Spieeltjie, amongst others. Al le Die Berge Nog So Blou, Lisa Se Klavier, Halala Afrika, Hemel op Tafelberg, Ou Ryperd en Kinders Van Die Wind are but a few of the earlier hits included. Tickets are available at Computicket for R70 or R90. Show starts at 20h00.
