Gamtoos Tourism is the marketing body for its members in the Gamtoos Valley and Baviaanskloof.
The Gamtoos Valley, known as the Eastern Gateway to the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, has become a very popular tourist destination and This is where you escape to, to renew your body, soul and mind.
The area is a vibrant mix of nature, agriculture and cultural influences and is called the fruit basket of the Eastern Cape.
Gamtoos Valley is home to the Kouga Dam, Queen Victoria’s profile, largest Sundial in Africa, grave site of Sarah Baartman, the well-known 9-hole Hankey Golf Course, Phillips Tunnel, Phillips Graves, Bergvenster (window in the mountain), and the famous Baobab Trees, Victoria Tree and Kei-apple tree.
Guarded by the majestic Cockscomb mountain the area offers visitors a range and diversity of activities to enjoy...from mountain biking, hiking, 4x4-routes, golfing, kayaking, fishing, bird-watching, game drives, photo safaris, star gazing and day trips into the Baviaanskloof.
Much of the appeal of Gamtoos Valley lies in it being secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city life.
Baviaanskloof, a World Heritage Site, and the third largest wilderness area in South Africa is home to an amazing diversity of habitat types and species. From yellowwoods to karoo bossies, thicket spekboom to fynbos proteas, and a nature lover's paradise. While travelling through this area, you will be forgiven for feeling as though you are the first person to set foot on some of the rugged mountain paths as the serenity of the untouched natural landscape is simply magnificent.
The reserve is known to be very botanically rich with over 1 214 plant species being identified in the wilderness area. There are 33 different species of Protea found within here and 11 types of aloe.
Today there are 48 mammal species found in the reserve.
66 recorded species of butterflies including the Baviaanskloof Blue that is only found within the park.
