Baakens Food Truck Friday Brings The Bay Together
Set in the heart of Baakens Valley, Port Elizabeth, the increasingly popular Baakens Food Truck Friday hits the streets on Friday, 10 February 2017. This community event has no entry fee and opens to the public at 4pm and closes at 9pm.
The monthly night market rounds up 23 unique food trucks, trailers and tuk-tuks from across the Eastern Cape, bringing Lower Valley Road to life. Visitors can look forward to Port Elizabeth’s best mobile kitchens, freshly preparing their signature dishes on the road, all priced under R45. Expect a wide variety of street food fare ranging from German bratwurst sausages, Indian curries and artisanal pizzas to frozen yoghurt, health food, Belgian waffles and Asian cuisine.
Dewald Hurter of the Makoy Food Truck says that the event has definitely boosted the street food industry in the Bay. “It’s a fantastic community platform which showcases the diversity in food and culture in Port Elizabeth,” says Hurter.
Co-organizer, Grant Foong of Foong’s Street Food, wants to drive local culture and encourage these entrepreneurs to excel in making this proudly PE event truly world-class. “We have had a phenomenal response from the community, and have added a number of exciting new traders to feed the masses. An interactive art and design pop-up market has also been introduced and will feature local township craftsmen, boutique shops, collectables and an on-site barber and express nail bar,” said Foong.
The event caters for the whole family, with an eclectic selection of bands and DJs playing throughout the night. There are also activities for kids, with a pedal go-kart track, pony rides, a jumping castle and circus acts. Bar facilities will be available from Fratelli Foods and the Richmond Hill Brewing Company.
Safety, security and cleanliness are priorities for the event. Technical support partners, Gardmed Ambulance Services, DKZ Cleaning and Skip Solutions ensure that this high standard is maintained.
Market-goers are encouraged to bring along their picnic blankets and camping chairs, enjoying an evening under the stars. In the case of poor weather conditions, there is limited space available inside the WERK_ workshop.
