Mandoza to dazzle Pier 14 shoppers

Unlucky Friday the 13th brings a bit of good fortune for Mandoza fans in Port Elizabeth with a free concert at the Pier 14 shopping centre in North End.
The gravel-voiced kwaito superstar will be performing on The Bridge on Pier 14’s first floor from 2pm. He will be meeting fans and signing autographs at the Jet Music store before he takes to the stage.
“This free concert is my way of giving back to the community. Also, it will let them know that I’m still alive in the music industry!” said Mandoza.
Mandoza, born Mduduzi Tshabalala, first hit headlines with his group Chiskop and was talent-spotted by the King of Kwaito himself, Arthur Mafokate. He released his first solo album in 1999.
The “Nkalakatha” hitmaker will be performing some of the songs that made him a household name but mostly an electrifying selection of newer tracks.
“It’s Friday the 13th. Come and be blown away by something totally new from me,” Mandoza urged his fans.
Fresh from touring a number of African countries, the PE concert kicks off Mandoza’s tour of the Eastern Cape to promote his 10th and latest CD Real Deal. House music sensation DJ Happy Girl will accompany him.
“This is the third time since 1999 that I’ll be performing at Pier 14. We like the setting of the mall – and I love PE,” said Mandoza, who last performed for Nelson Mandela Bay fans at the New Year’s Eve party at the Springs resort in Uitenhage in 2009.
Although Mandoza’s trademark “kwaito with a message” musical style captures the rhythm of township life, he has had surprising crossover success.
“Nkalakatha” achieved multi-platinum status and hit number one on radio stations across the nation in 2000. His 2004 collaboration with Danny K, Same Difference, won the Best Pop Album at the 2005 South African Music Awards (Sama).
Not content to just attain musical success, this multiple Sama and Metro FM Music award-winner has also taken his performance skills to the big screen. In 2005, Mandoza was cast in a major supporting role in the rugby-themed movie Number 10, and also contributed to the soundtrack.
When asked about his future plans, Mandoza acknowledged, “There is also a chance of doing another movie soon.”
