Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism commemorates Youth Day with scholars from Kwazakhele

Friday, 15 June, 2018, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism commemorate Youth Day through introducing 50 children from Seyisi Primary School Kwazakhele to Route 67, stories about Madiba and Nelson Mandela Bay as a destination. Opting to utilise Route 67 as a location to share and impart knowledge with the youth as the route is symbolic to the 67 years Madiba dedicated to the liberation struggle and this year we will be celebrating the Nelson Mandela Centenary.

Youth Day pays tribute to the uprisings of the Soweto youth on June 16, 1976.  The day is celebrated to recognize the contribution of the youth towards the liberation of the country and the stand towards fair education for all. Youth Day celebrations are important to honour the past but also empower youth to be the leaders of our future and part of a positive legacy.

Named after humanitarian and world icon, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, Nelson Mandela Bay (the only geographical area in the world which has been allowed to retain Madiba’s name), possesses qualities that resonate with that of our beloved hero. The day allows us to impart some of Madiba’s traits and lessons of dignity, respect, forgiveness and humility to name a few.

The tour of “Untold Stories” of Nelson Mandela are unique to the destination and illustrates the reason Dr Mandela gave permission to have his name given to the Metro out of thousands of cities from across the world. The stories are about people and events that helped shape Mandela alongside his peers amongst others being Raymond Mhlaba and Govan Mbeki. The tour was made interactive and fun for the children; however, the full tour is available for all visitors and locals to the destination.

Additional motivation to inspire the youth was shared by Sun Boardwalk Mr PE UberMann Ofentse Boloko as well as Mr PE UberMann Junior, Marco Venter. Role models of this nature are important to nurture the scholar’s aspirations and remind them that their dreams are attainable.

Grade 4 learners enjoyed hearing stories that can mould and inspire them to be future leaders, enjoyed lunch and the message of the importance that education can empower them.

Nelson Mandela once shared, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”
