Uitenhage Street Carnival Celebrates 30 Years
The 30th Annual celebrations of the Uitenhage Street Carnival takes place on the 24th and 25th of November 2017 in Caledon and Market Street.
Road Closures are from Thursday 12 noon on the 23rd of November when setup takes place. Friday afternoon at 15h00 the program starts with a host of local singers, dancers and rappers to entertain young and old in English and Afrikaans alike. The highlight on Friday evening will be the first live performance of the winner of Idols 2017 competition, Paxton to close off the night. She will be doing her versions of all the songs that made her popular in the national competition.
Saturday morning the 5km and 10km starts with late entrants still having a chance to enter from as early as 5am on the day. The race commences at 7am. The prize giving will be done on the main stage with crafts, fun fair and food stalls open. The runners will finish with plenty of lucky draws from Bingo Grill in Uitenhage that will be having a Lucky Wheel throughout the weekend with spot prizes.
Saturday morning activities after the race continue with clowns, magicians and cartoon characters moving around to entertain the kids as well as street activations with stilt walkers and face painters. The afternoon entertainment line-up starts with a boere orkes, hip-hop dancers and a local beatboxer (Zuma) from the Uitenhage Kwanabohle area. A motorbike parade will see the younger adults entertained as the bikers do some tyre burning and a sound display whilst a demonstration will also be part of the activities in the afternoon.
The carnival will have four different police enforcement entities (SA Police, Metro Police, Metro Security and Municipal security) one of them being the Metro Police that will be on site. Security will be in full force from start to finish to clamp down on bylaws such as drinking in public and driving under the influence.
Making sure our children are well cared for and protected the Rotary Club of Uitenhage has implemented a “TAG A CHILD” system where parents tag their kids with an armband in case the child gets lost within the crowd, organisers then have a contact number to communicate with parents.
A R15 000.00 cash draw takes place at about 17h30 whereby one person wins R10 000.00 and two lucky draw winners each win R2 000.00 and one walks away with R1 000.00.
Later into the afternoon the carnival will be host to some of the most popular entertainment on offer such as Terrance, Lee ann Wales, Les Simon, Gerhard Pace, Stone Sisters, Sdudla Mathousand, Early B as well as Luke M. All local artists are from Nelson Mandela Bay who has performed on national platforms all around South Africa.
The annual highlight is when the Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay switches on the festival lights in the area of Uitenhage at about 20h00. International Artist Portia Monique will take the stage to perform her hits such as Do better, Colours of Love, Grace, Ecstasy and Nobody.
