Description

The Alliance Française is a world-wide non-profit, apolitical and non-religious network devoted to promoting French language and Francophone cultures.
The Alliance Française is the world’s largest French teaching centre with over 1,000 organisations in 134 countries, serving over 350 000 students every year, recognised and sponsored by the French government.
The Alliance Française of Port Elizabeth was founded in 1960. Its present location is in the historical suburb of Richmond Hill, where it now owns a beautiful Victorian House in Mackay Street. The Alliance Française of Port Elizabeth is the fifth largest in the South African network established in 1936. The Alliance Française provides many services as part of its mission of promoting French language and French culture. From French courses to Xhosa courses, the AF is an open door to French culture through the libraries and through the rich cultural programme proposed throughout the year.
The Alliance Française network in Southern Africa is present in South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. The network comprises 20 Alliance Françaises in all major cities proposing a full range of French courses and cultural events throughout the year. The Alliance Française of Port Elizabeth is ideally situated, right in the heart of the city, in an upmarket area with plenty of cafés, restaurants, designer shops and other businesses.
Since we believe that learning a language is inherent to experiencing its culture, we organise weekly events in various fields allowing students and members of the public to engage in cross cultural dialogue.
